Tutoring FAQ’s

FAQ’s About Becoming a Tutor

Do I need any special license to become a tutor?
No, you do not require any special certification or license to become a tutor in the U.S. or Canada.

What kind of tutoring can I do?
Since you’re the boss, you choose what type of tutoring you want to do. When you sign up, simply choose the subjects and levels you want to tutor, as well as the method of tutoring. You can also do in-person tutoring or online tutoring or both.

How do I register?
The registration process is fast and easy. Simply go to the Become a Tutor page, click on theJOIN NOW button and complete your tutor profile. The whole process will take about 15 minutes or less.

What if my subject isn’t listed?
If your subject isn’t listed, please send us an e-mail and we will consider adding it to our list of subjects. We are always looking for ways to improve and expand our listing service so your feedback is important to us.

How soon will my listing show up?
Your listing will show up almost immediately after you have completed and submitted your profile.

Any secrets to writing an effective listing?
Your tutor profile should be as detailed as possible – be sure to include your education, experience and references. Also, students are more likely to contact you if you can tutor multiple subjects and grade levels, so list as many as you can reasonably teach.

What’s the cost to register?
Please refer to the Become a Tutor page for a detailed list of pricing options.

Am I an employee of Tutor Village if I am listed on your website?
No – You are not an employee of Tutor Village or Academy At Home in any way. Tutor Village is simply a paid listing service for self-employed tutors and tutoring agencies.

What subjects should I list?
You should list all subjects and grade levels that you are qualified and competent to teach. That being said, you should list as many subjects and grade levels as you can, to increase the likelihood that students will call you.

How much can I really earn?
This is dependent upon a number of factors including the area in which you tutor, the subjects and grades you teach, as well as your background, qualifications and hourly rates. Typical rates are between $25 - $60 per hour for in-person tutoring. Online tutoring rates tend to be a bit less expensive.

What if I want to change my tutor profile?
After you have registered and completed your tutor profile, you may change your profile at any time. Simply click on Tutor Login from our homepage and enter your username and password. You will be directed to your tutor profile where you can make any changes you wish.

What if I forget my username or password?
If you forget your username and/or password, just contact us by e-mail and request that the information be e-mailed to you.

What is online tutoring?
Online tutoring is simply tutoring that takes place over the Internet using an instant messaging platform such as MSN Messenger, or one of the many other platforms or web-based messaging or conferencing services that are available. Online tutoring uses a combination of features which may include messaging, voice, video, whiteboard, e-mail, and file-sharing. If you are looking for an online tutor, be sure to ask what method he/she uses, and what tools or software you will need to facilitate your sessions.

Does Tutor Village host the online sessions?
Although Tutor Village does not actually host online tutoring sessions, there are a number of online services that will do this for you, some of them for free. Probably the most well known is MSN Messenger, which is available to anyone for free, and provides a good basic service
