Tutoring FAQ's

FAQ’s About Finding a Tutor

How do I use this website to find a tutor?
Simply click on the Find a Tutor link on our homepage, then type in your State/Province, and the Subject and Grade Level you wish to be tutored in, then press Search. Our database will immediately present you with a list of tutors who meet your search criteria. You may click any of these records to view the details for each tutor, including name, contact information, experience etc.

What is the cost to find a tutor?
Absolutely nothing! We don’t charge students for using our tutor search service. We only charge tutors for listing their profiles with us.

What is the cost for hiring a tutor?
The tutors listed on our website set their own rates, which you will see listed on their tutor profile. Most tutors charge an hourly rate.

What kinds of tutoring are available?
The method and location of tutoring sessions may vary from tutor to tutor. In-person tutoring may take place in the tutor’s home or office, or they may come to your home or another location like a library or school. Other tutors may prefer online tutoring via MSN Messaging, E-mail, or some other online platform that may include voice, messaging, video, or a combination of these. It is important that you find a tutor who uses a method and location for their tutoring that you feel comfortable with.

What are the credentials of the tutors on your website?
Because anyone may list their services on our website, you will find all different kinds of tutors including certified teachers, non-certified tutors, college/university teachers and professors, college students and more. It is important to review the credentials and experience of any tutor before contacting them, as well as performing a background check.

Where does the tutoring take place?
In-person tutoring may take place in the tutor’s home or office, or in your own home. If the person being tutored is under 18, it is strongly recommended that a parent/guardian is present during the sessions for safety reasons. If you are not comfortable having the tutor in your home or going to the tutor’s home, you could meet at a library, school, community centre, coffee shop, or other public place that is suitable.

What do I do once I find a tutor?
Once you have identified a tutor that may be right for you, be sure to review their profile carefully. You may contact them directly from the information on their profile by phone or e-mail. Before you contact them, you may want to write down a list of questions to ask. You may want to discuss background, teaching style, hours of availability, where the tutoring will take place, references, experience, rates or whatever.

Is there a limit to how many tutors I may contact?
You may contact as many tutors as you want. In fact, we encourage you to shop around for a tutor who is right for you.

What is the payment process?
The payment method is up to the individual tutor. When you click on a tutor’s profile you will see hourly rate and payment methods associated with that tutor.

How does online tutoring work?
Online tutoring is simply tutoring that takes place over the Internet using an instant messaging platform such as MSN Messenger, or one of the many other platforms or web-based messaging or conferencing services. Online tutoring uses a combination of features which may include messaging, voice, video, whiteboard, e-mail, and file-sharing. If you are looking for an online tutor, be sure to ask what method he/she uses, and what tools or software you will need to facilitate your sessions.
